Why and How

Reinventing high school requires a full understanding of the "why" and "how" that goes into such an ambitious endeavor.

Let's start with the "why" behind PPHS. After realizing that too many students who are talented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) are not succeeding or being challenged in today’s traditional education system, Purdue University designed a goal to successfully prepare students for college and careers while providing skills necessary for an evolving workforce.

Mitch Daniels, the Purdue University President said, "Recognizing that far too few urban Indianapolis high school graduates are academically prepared for the rigors of postsecondary education in scientific and technological disciplines, Purdue is leading in the creation of the Purdue Polytechnic Indianapolis High School."

Now that we understand the "why" behind PPHS, it is equally important to understand "how" Purdue set out to accomlish their lofty goals.

The school's groundbreaking teaching and learning techniques are designed to help underrepresented and underserved students thrive and gain valuable STEM knowledge and skills. By placing a heavy emphasis on learning by doing, the PPHS curriculum gives students deep knowledge, applied skills, and experiences in the workplace. Purdue Polytechnic High School can be a stepping stone to a college career at Purdue University or a direct pathway to a high-tech career, where graduates’ precise skills will help them be successful.
